SEO and Marketing For Therapists
Today I want to share with you a few creative ideas for life coach marketing, when you’re thinking about marketing coaching or marketing for therapists if you’re a counselor in mental health, private practice.
Now you probably know that at the beginning or you might have heard that at the beginning you need to use some paid advertising. Now as I talk about it in the Six Figure Practice program, your goal is actually gradually switch from paid advertising to free advertising. And why is that important? You want to make sure that when you already are established; when you already have clients coming in in the short term you won’t be paying forever for advertising, right? Because life coach marketing or marketing for therapists can definitely be done using some advanced strategies such as search engine optimization.
Now today I want to share with you how even during this crisis, during this week, last week I had, if I’m not mistaking, 12 consultation calls that were scheduled by potential clients without a lot of effort on my end. There was some effort involved but it wasn’t paid necessarily. I paid with my own time and energy. So I’ll show you some figures from what’s happening behind the scenes in my private practice and give you some ideas about how can you start learning about those advanced strategies on your own even today.
Of course, your results will always be a function of the efforts that you put into it, right? So educating yourself in those business skills, learning how to actually do life coach marketing or marketing for therapists. It doesn’t really matter if you are doing marketing … if you’re marketing coaching or you’re marketing mental health private practice, the process is all the same even if you’re a consultant, whatever it is. When you have a business online you should totally use a salad of different strategies so you have clients coming in from different sources.
Now what I’ll be talking about today is mostly search engine optimization, how to monitor it, how to create it and some ways that you can with ease start learning that on your own.
So let me share with you, let’s go into Analytics MOZ. I have two different websites, both for my counseling private practice and for the coaching private practice. What MOZ does, moz.com, it’s a great software for monitoring and doing some keyword exploration for your marketing efforts. Now, of course, when people look for you in Google they might look for different things, like for example, since my main clientele in my counseling practice is as couples therapist and at least in counseling people look for the counselors in their area, you can see that I’m monitoring 489 different keywords for my counseling practice in terms of where they show up in the Google search results, right?
People usually will go to the main first few pages and those are the websites they’ll click in. If it’s more than 50 results and on, it’s kind of buried in Google and you’ll not really get found, right? So my goal is to make sure that my website ranks high as much as possible in those search results. So when you see this rank column, it means that for people in Colorado. Type in couple’s therapy Boulder in Google right now, it’s ranked as the 12th result which I think it’s either first page or the top of the second page in Google, which is wonderful, right? You want to get found.
I also want to make sure that whatever I’m doing, and we’ll talk about the strategies to make it happen in a moment, that those strategies work constantly, bringing my website up and up and up in the search results. So you can see, for example, during the last few days my website which is specifically the pitch about couple’s therapy went up three results up for couple’s therapy Boulder. Or, for example, 17 places up for counselor in Boulder, right? That’s a very lucrative keyword to be ranked for, right? And all those are ways for me to be found by people who already are looking for taking action, basically contacting a therapist, right? So psychotherapist Boulder, family therapy Boulder, family therapist Boulder. Those are all results on the first two pages which is wonderful.
Now I’ll give you an example for my coaching business, and I’m doing mostly business coaching and also ADHD coaching. You can see that … well, first of all if people look for me by name, Sasha Raskin coach, I’m number one on the result on Google results. Now I’m tracking this for national, right? This is not location-based. If anywhere in the US people are looking for those keywords that’s how it would get ranked for. The reason is for counseling I want to rank higher specifically for people in my state, because those are the people who I can work with. For coaching it doesn’t really matter because I can work with anyone in the US or all over the world. I’m focused more on the states.
So you can see that ADHD coaching, anywhere in the world, anyone in the US is number one. ADHD Boulder coach, number one. By the way, I noticed that even coaching clients, even though it can all be done online, that’s a great tip for you to know, if you’re a coach and you’re doing some life coaching marketing or if you’re focusing on marketing coaching for your business you should know that people will still want many times or your potential clients they’re looking for finding someone in their area. I think it has to do with many different reasons, but mostly people feel comfortable with working with people in their area. I guess something about feeling safety, at home and maybe having some commonalities with the coaches they work with. And some people actually want to meet in person even though it’s coaching.
Now our business coach Boulder, you can see that it’s number three result, it went up during the last week by one. Life and business coaching Boulder went up by five, it’s number three result now. See, all those green arrows you can see that it tells me, “Okay, with all the efforts that I put into search engine optimization it went up by 4 results, 12 to 2,” right? So it’s way easier to get found.
It also shows how many people are looking for it. For example, if I know that 11 to 50 on average in a month are looking for this specific term, ADHD Boulder coach, and I’m number one, a big chance that my website will be clicked on probably by … I don’t want to give you the specific statistics right now, but you can guess that if it’s number one result a lot of people are clicking and at least one client a month will become my new client if I have the space for it, which is high quality problems you have, right? If you have almost full private practice and new clients coming in that’s a great place to be in because you can really refer out clients that you might not necessarily are excited or feel they’re a good fit to work with you without being, “Oh, I really need clients. I want to work with everyone.”
So a little bit about search engine optimization. This is basically you creating good content and that is really around the keywords that people are looking for when marketing coaching or marketing for therapists or for any business really, but we’re focusing on coaching and counselors right now. If Google sees that you’re constantly creating new content around those keywords then the Google bot will think, “Oh, okay, those are good websites. They provide content for people. It’s high quality content. Of course, I’ll rank them higher,” right?
Now I think that the term itself, search engine optimization, it just scares so many counselors and coaches away which leads to them either ignoring it altogether or paying way too much for search engine optimization companies. It’s not rocket science, really. You can learn how to make it on your own and you’ll probably be way more interested in putting a lot like more good quality effort than any other company out there. Generally speaking, that, I know it’s a generalization, that’s what I noticed. I’m really passionate about my businesses so I usually put a lot of quality work into it.
Now so let’s debunk this myth – search engine optimization is not difficult. If you want to learn about it even if you do end up outsourcing it I would go to the beginners guide to seo at Moz.com, and I’ll place the link in the description. This is a great place to start to kind of get a good overview. You see that there are seven chapters here what SEO is really about. So that would be the first step for you even if you know a little bit or if you don’t know at all, that’s a good overview that will give you some good head start.
Now if you really want to go into depth about how do you actually create content in a good way, right? You’ll have a little bit of information here if you’re thinking about marketing coaching or marketing for therapists if you have a mental health private practice or life coaching marketing. For example, assessment in couple’s therapy, sharing a blog post about what do I actually do as a part of … so those are my mentors, the Gottman’s, and they have a great tool that I use. Now you can see that there are all those different keywords like couples, like 57 keywords here which I have on that blog post and that links to my couple’s therapy and all that. So that’s just like a tiny, tiny glimpse, like just a few minutes about what you can start doing.
If you really want to go in depth with it and actually have a system, clear systems, how to make it easy and fun, all this content writing process because therapists and coaches are kind of scared when you think about life coaching marketing or marketing coaching, marketing for therapists through writing blog posts which is just one small way from all the search engine optimization strategies. People get scared. I don’t know if I can write, I don’t have the time or I don’t have the energy, I don’t like writing, or it’s scary to put myself out there.
